He moved to the Beaudesert area at around 1872, age 21, where he met Hilda Hannah Everdell (born 18th February 1863). The two were married by Reverend J. Whiting on the 10th June 1880 at Veresdale. Alfred was a grazier around Beaudesert for the next 45 years before his death. A travel article about the region, printed in the Queenslander on Tuesday 4th March 1893, described his farm as 'a little bit of everything, pigs mostly'. Alfred also served as a much respected councillor and alderman on both the Tabragalba Divisional Board and the Beaudesert Shire Council, before retiring in 1915. He died two years later at age 65 on the 17th January 1917, and is buried in the Woodhill Cemetery. After Alfred’s death, Hilda continued living on their property at 'Lady Brook' for some time until she moved to a house at Westbourn, Eaglesfield Street in Beaudesert. She died on the 27th December 1941, and is also buried in the Woodhill Cemetery. An interesting story about Alfred is that when he was 10 years old, he was witness to another child drowning in a river near Petrie’s Bight (which is under the northern end of where the Story Bridge is now). He was then called to give evidence before a Coroner and a jury of eight people at a Brisbane Hospital. He had warned the boy who drowned not to go in the water, knowing he could not swim. The child drowned about four metres away from the shore, despite his brother’s and other’s efforts to save him.
