Moe Kyaw Than, 45, a volunteer with the Myanmar Red Cross Society winches in pain from wounded sustained when his convoy was attacked on February 17 between the capital of Kokang, Laukkai, and Chinshwehaw, by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, a separatist ethnic-Chinese militia attempting to drive the government out of the northern territories, according to the Myanmar army. An estimated 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and some 30,000 have crossed the border into the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan following fighting between Myanmar's army and insurgents, the Chinese government said, repeating a call for restraint. Burmese President Thein Sein has vowed not to “lose an inch of Myanmar’s territory,” implying, but not expressly stating, a wildly held belief that China is fueling the movement in an effort to annex portions of the country.
